regurgitated NONSENSE
This was in Variety…
Love it. You know my feelings on the finale.
The Season Cinco hate is ridiculous (an ode to my favorite show)
Look I know it was up and down, and probably the weakest season, but you know what, I still enjoyed it, and I feel like this last season was all about fan service…
Most of the people complaining seem like (or admit) they never saw the show until the later seasons and/or on DVD so I’m honestly not going to give credence to all the smearing going on.
It was never meant to please your celebrity-worshipping-gotta-watch-everything-my-friends-do-I fear for out future-17-year-old mainstream ass anyway.
Too much “oh I saw a celebrity I recognized on there once it was funny, but all this other weird stuff SUCKS”. Obviously it wasn’t the show for you.
I remember the first time I saw a promo for TEASGJ, with Bob Odenkirk awkwardly interviewing these 2 unknown men about their new “movie”, and immediately knowing that this show was going to become a part of me.
This isn’t meant to be a “I was watching Tim and Eric before….” rant. Not my point. It never got big enough to act like that. I never would want it to have.
One of my favorite parts of the show is the fans and the sense of community it created amongst us, and the real celebrities of the show, guys like Dunn and Quall and D.L.H. who are more loved than they can even probably comprehend…
The live show was one of the most amazing experiences of my life…being around that many like-minded people and talking to James Quall and seeing the very real, sincere appreciation for all the love, even if at the same time not quite understanding how/why it was even possible to be so loved/recognized by so many strangers…
As well as the humbling and honestly saddening experience of meeting a David Liebe Hart concerned with nothing but selling CDs and seeing just how very real these guys are, and the reality of the lives they’ll now be returning to. Here I am asking for an autograph and this guy, this hero of mine, is just trying to make a buck like anybody else.
There is a realness and honesty in these guy’s performances that made the show what it is. Far far more than any celebrity cameo could ever achieve. (not that I didn’t love the cameos, they rocked too).
So in that regard, and with those experiences meeting them, I thought the ending was a touching (no really) nod/thank you to the guys that gave the show it’s soul. Ridiculous to say about awesome show, but my eyes were not completely dry at that point.
(And yeah, go ahead and argue that wasn’t even the point, that it was just a silly bit about spoiled man-milk killing off their friends, that I shouldn’t read too deep into Tim and Eric. I don’t care. I thought it was beautiful.)
Before this gets too rant-y (too late, I know), I guess my point is that this show struck a chord with me unlike just about any other show has, and I will passionately defend it against young, “everything sucks”, internet haters that were too late to the party.
Well, what was going to be a quick rant has turned in to a love letter/eulogy to one of my favortite shows.
So in closing, I will say, I’m gonna miss you, Richard. I hope you aren’t Dunn entertaining me just yet.
Salame…
